Acing Your Video Interview!
Acing Your Video Interview!
At Tardis Group, our main focus is to put people together, the hiring manager and the potential employee.
A quality recruiter will do their best to prepare both parties prior to the interview, this comes in a variety of forms, from sharing details about prior work histories, details of personalities, sharing common interests and other such details that may assist in a better bond established during the interview.
What eventuates in the interview however, is up to the candidate and the hiring client. Sometimes it’s a perfect match, sometimes it isn’t.
Since 2020 we have seen a huge increase in video interviews, and we foresee this continuing. There are advantages and disadvantages to video meetings vs face to face. It’s important to go into a video interview in the same manner you would in a face to face meeting, with some extra hurdles you will need to consider prior to the call.
- Set up your space - Have a clean, quiet background and eliminate any distractions. Ensure any family members or housemates are aware you have an interview going on at that time. Put any pets outside or in another room of the house.
- Check your internet connection, camera, lighting, and sound prior to the interview. You could even run through a dress rehearsal with a friend.
- Dress for success - including pants!! (You may need to stand up at some point during the interview).
- Keep clear eye contact with the camera, not the reflection of yourself.
- Stay focused and engaged, sit still – try not to fidget or swing on the chair.
- Keep your CV and few notes in front of you for reference, however, try not to refer to them often.
- Turn off all notifications and ensure your phone is on silent.
- Remember to stay responsive after you wave goodbye, and until the connection is completely terminated.
As the saying goes “you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression”. Focus on the detail, put you best foot forward and with the assistance of a good recruiter, land yourself that perfect role!
